We all know how important your bed is, it's your comfort zone, your haven and where you go to relax and recharge for what the next day brings.

So it makes sense that you want to keep your bed feeling comfy and looking great. However, when it comes to fabric upholstered beds, it can be a little harder to keep them in tip-top shape as they require a little more care and attention than other types of beds.

So we thought we'd put together a comprehensive guide full of helpful hints and tips to keep your fabric upholstered bed nice and clean and looking as good as new/the day you bought it.

Understanding Your Fabric Upholstery

Understanding what your bed is made from is a vital first step in learning how to expertly maintain fabric upholstery. There is a range of different fabrics used in the construction of fabric beds, all with their unique cleaning requirements. To assist you, we've included a brief guide below that summarises the most common materials and the best cleaning methods for them.

Linen: This timeless fabric brings a light, airy feel to any bedroom. Linen is known for its exceptional breathability and natural look, making it ideal for warmer climates and its natural fibres can be prone to wrinkling and may show wear if not maintained properly. Regular, gentle vacuuming and avoiding direct sunlight are key to keeping linen looking fresh.

Crushed Velvet: For those seeking a touch of opulence, crushed velvet is a popular choice. This fabric offers a unique texture with a shimmering appearance that changes depending on the angle at which you view it or how much light is shining on it. Its care requires a gentle touch – avoid heavy brushing or scrubbing. Instead, use a soft-bristled brush to maintain its texture and a mild detergent for cleaning.

Malham Weave: This robust fabric is a testament to durability and style. With its tightly woven structure, Malham weave is resilient to daily wear and tear, making it suitable for regular use. To maintain its appearance, regular vacuuming with an upholstery attachment is recommended, and immediate attention to spills is crucial to prevent staining.

Plush: As the name suggests, plush fabric offers a luxuriously soft feel, bringing an extra layer of comfort to your bed. Its dense, deep pile can trap dust and allergens, so frequent vacuuming is essential. When tackling stains, use a gentle, fabric-appropriate cleaner and avoid saturating the material.

Microfibre: Known for its practicality, microfibre is a synthetic fabric celebrated for its stain resistance and ease of care. It's an excellent choice for those looking for a low-maintenance option. Regular cleaning with a damp cloth and mild detergent can keep microfibre looking as good as new.

Our Top Tips and Cleaning Guide

Dive into our helpful guide, packed with essential tips to make sure your fabric upholstered bed stays in tip-top shape. Check out our expert advice for cleaning, maintaining, and protecting your bed so it stays looking fresh and new.

Preventative Measures

  • Use a mattress protector as this will shield the upholstery from spills, dust mites, and pet dander, making cleaning easier.
  • Make sure to spot clean immediately as the sooner you tackle spills or stains, the easier it is to remove them and prevent permanent damage.
  • Regularly fluff and air out cushions as this helps prevent flattening and keeps the fabric fresh too.
  • Minimise exposure to direct sunlight as sun exposure can fade fabrics over time.

Cleaning Techniques

Steam cleaning: For deep cleaning, consider renting a professional-grade steam cleaner suitable for upholstery. Ensure you use distilled water and test on a hidden area first.

Baking soda for odour removal: Sprinkle baking soda on the fabric, leave it for an hour or two, and then vacuum it up. This helps absorb lingering odours like sweat or smoke.

Essential oils for freshening: Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil (lavender, lemon, etc.) to the cleaning solution for a natural fragrance boost.

Microfibre magic: Microfibre cloths are excellent for gently removing dust and grime without scratching delicate fabrics.

Our Fabric Upholstered Bed Maintenance Tips

On top of a regular cleaning routine, you should follow these maintenance tips to extend the life of your bedding fabric.

  • Regularly air out the bed: Open windows to allow fresh air to circulate and prevent moisture buildup.
  • Rotate and flip the mattress: Follow the manufacturer's instructions for rotating and flipping your mattress to prevent uneven wear and tear on the upholstery.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals and bleach: These can damage the fabric and cause discolouration.
  • Professional cleaning: For deep cleaning or stubborn stains, consider consulting a professional upholstery cleaning service.
  • Test cleaning solutions: Always test any cleaning solutions on an inconspicuous area of the fabric before applying it to the entire surface.
  • Take real care with delicate fabrics: It’s vitally important to be careful with gentle delicate fabrics like silk or satin.
  • Consider how you clean: Avoid using harsh scrubbing or rubbing motions, as they can seriously damage the fabric.

With our practical tips, you can expertly care for your fabric-upholstered bed. In the years ahead, you'll reap the rewards as your bed stays in the same fantastic condition as the day you bought it. Don’t forget you can find an extensive range of stunning upholstered beds here at Sloomy, along with mattresses and more to transform your bedroom space.

My experience with Sloomy has been extremely disappointing from start to finish. The bed ordered via Debenhams for my vulnerable mother-in-law, who suffers from COPD and has limited mobility following a stroke, failed to arrive on the scheduled delivery date with no communication, update, or explanation. We had spent the day preparing for the delivery, including removing her existing bed, only to be left without any bed at all when the delivery failed to turn up. As a result, she was forced to spend the night sleeping on a sofa, causing significant discomfort and distress given her medical conditions. Despite the seriousness of the situation, there was little acknowledgment of the impact this had. When the bed finally arrived the following day, we discovered that the headboard could not be assembled because the required fittings were either missing or defective. What should have been a straightforward resolution turned into a frustrating and prolonged process. Attempts to obtain support have been met with slow responses, with Debenhams and sloomy passignbuck between each other, repeated requests for the same information, and a complete lack of ownership of the issue. We have been repeatedly asked to wait for escalations that never seem to happen, provide photographs multiple times, and start the process over with different agents who appear unaware of previous correspondence. Most concerning has been the apparent lack of urgency despite it being made clear that the customer affected is vulnerable. The combination of a missed delivery, poor communication, an incomplete product, lengthy delays in customer service responses, and failure to resolve the problem promptly has left us with very little confidence in Sloomy's customer care. Overall, this experience has been stressful, frustrating, and wholly unacceptable. I would not expect a vulnerable customer to be treated in this manner, and I hope significant improvements are made to both delivery reliability and after-sales support.

I ordered my sons bed to arrive two days before his birthday, I was pleasantly surprised when I received a text message to say it would actually arrive 6 days before his birthday, delivery was scheduled between 6am and 11am. On the delivery day I was at work and by 2.30pm I received a message saying the delivery van had broken down and they would contact me with an alternative date. Now I can understand that these things happen, what I do not understand and was infuriating was that I must have rang the landline number 20 times and the mobile number used to text me the same amount of times and that no one pciked up or answered the phone. The landline number just rang 5 times and then went dead. The service was shocking and being in limbo worrying if my son would get his bed before his birthday was frustrating. I did eventually get my bed at 6.35am on a bank holiday Monday morning!! I will admit the actual bed is very good quality and I cannot understimate this My advice for this company is that be aware if something goes wrong then you will be annoyed an frustrated

I would strongly advise others to think carefully before ordering from Sloomy. The bed I received was faulty and not fit for use. From the outset, resolving the issue was made unnecessarily difficult. Despite explaining that I am disabled, I was repeatedly asked to repackage and handle a large, broken bed using the original packaging, which was not a reasonable or accessible request. When I asked for communication by email as a reasonable adjustment, this was ignored. I was instead pushed into phone contact, and when I explained I record calls to help manage my disability, the representative refused to continue the conversation. At no point was a fair or practical resolution offered. The overall handling of this issue shows a complete lack of customer care and disregard for accessibility. This has been stressful, upsetting, and entirely avoidable. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this company.

Appalling Service and are not interested in retaining customers and obviously do not want a business. Placed an order with a specified delivery date to be advised by message that they cannot deliver until a week later than this. No apology and not interested in resolving. Do not use this company
