As darker nights draw in, the temperature drops and storms begin to brew outside, there’s evermore reason to prepare for the winter season with some luxurious bed-frame choices and bedding.

Creating a comfortable bedroom is a great way to enhance sleep, strengthen your immune system and be your best from day to day during the cold season.

In this guide, we’ll break down why it’s important to prepare your bedding for the winter season, with tips on how to choose the right bed frame, headboard, fabric finish and mattress. We’ll also explore some lovely accessories that you can use to make your bedroom feel cosy and inviting - they’ll turn it into a peaceful refuge after a long day being in the cold.

Why Is It Important To Prepare My Bed For The Winter Months?

Choosing the right bed, maintaining it and having the additional accessories can completely transform your bedroom space. You can easily make it feel like a cosy and comfortable retreat as the nights draw in and the mornings become icier.

Keeping your bedroom warm not only makes you look forward to relaxing in it at the end of the day, but it’s also an essential way to fight off viruses and infections that we are often prone to during these months. It is understood that being in a cold bedroom makes it easier for bacteria to enter your body, so having a nice and cosy bedroom is an excellent way to fight those common colds that occur throughout the season.

Having the right comfortable bed, mattress, headboard and accessories that keep you warm all throughout winter allows you to have many nights of uninterrupted sleep, even when the thunderstorms are in full force outside your window throughout the night. Enhanced sleep quality strengthens your immune system, allowing you to be your best from day to day throughout the festive period.

Another advantage of keeping your bedroom cosy and warm throughout the winter months is how it reduces damp and condensation. This is important for not only your immune system, but also it helps protect the maintenance of your bedroom and decor.

Simply having a cosy bedroom throughout the winter months is important for your mental health - having accessories such as ambient lighting is a great way to restore a lot of the light that we lose in the UK during the colder months. A calm, stress free environment allows you to relax and unwind during the Christmas rush.

Choosing The Right Bed: Divan Vs Ottoman

If you’re shopping around for a new bed, it’s a good tip to consider different bed options for the winter season. We have Divan Beds and Ottoman Beds to choose from, which are both great for the winter months in their own ways. Let’s take a look at how the Divan and Ottoman bed differ from each other, and what makes each one ideal for the winter season.

An ottoman bed is designed with a gas-lift system that you can easily lift up, revealing plenty of ample storage space underneath. If you’re someone who requires a lot of storage space, it's a great option for you. During the winter, you can store all sorts of large items, such as the suitcases that you used for summer holidays. If you've already maxed out your storage space in your wardrobe, you can store plenty of your summer clothes in the storage space of the Ottoman Bed. They're fantastic options to choose from, ready to revamp your bedroom during the winter season as they declutter and store a lot of items that you may not use during this period.

Divan beds are designed with built in drawers at the base. Despite having a little bit less storage space than the Ottoman Bed, they’re still ideal choices to make for the winter season. You can store a lot of your everyday items that you may need during these cold months, including anything from hats, scarves, gloves and winter boots - they’re perfect to make those sluggish morning routines feel easier and more motivational before you de-ice your car and start your day.

Often designed with no slats on the base, our divan beds have a more solid structure. This really helps with heat insulation as there are less gaps for air to circulate through, keeping you warm and toasty during the night.

Choosing The Right Fabric Finishes

Choosing the right fabric finish is also a good thing to consider when it comes to preparing your bed and bedroom for the winter season. We have a wide variety of fabric finishes to choose from, that each help insulate heat and keep you feeling warmer as the temperature drops.

Plush velvet is a dense fabric made with a thick upright pile. It’s great for trapping heat, reducing draft and adding an extra layer of insulation - these are all the kinds of things that are sure to keep you warm during the winter season. Layering this with soft throws and cotton blankets is the extra step further to ensure that you’re kept feeling nice and warm as the nights become freezing outside.

If you’d like to get a taste for the different fabric options that we have available, feel free to order a fabric sample. This allows you to get a feel for the different fabrics that we have before making any final decision.

Picking The Best Mattress For Winter

To make your bedroom and bed feel even warmer and cosy, picking the right mattress is another factor that you could consider for the cooler months. Despite all of our mattresses being handcrafted to a high standard of quality, some mattresses have more winter-friendly and heat-insulating properties than others.

Our memory foam mattresses are designed with compact structures with high viscosity, meaning they mould to your body’s shapes, contours and preferred sleeping positions over time. Due to its dense nature, the memory foam mattress retains heat easily as it can’t escape through the reduced gaps. This makes it a great option for the winter season as you can feel warm and snug quicker when you get into bed, improving your sleep quality throughout the months.

This is not to say that our other mattresses aren’t great for some people. If you’re a hot sleeper even during the winter months, the pocket sprung mattress allows for improved air circulation as there are more gaps in between its coil structure. So, you’ll be tossing and turning less throughout the night with this option if you’re someone who is prone to feeling too warm when they sleep.

Why Headboards Are Also Good To Consider

Choosing the right headboard to prepare for the winter season is also an ideal way to create that relaxing retreat on those stormy evenings. Headboards can also play a big role when it comes to keeping your bed nice and warm.

Headboards not only provide plenty of support when you’re sitting upright, but they also act as another barrier between you and the cold wall, preventing draughts. This helps you feel warmer on those cold evenings, whilst also acting as a sound barrier to block out any noise that is coming from those gusty winds from wintry storms.

For a more heat-insulating headboard option, consider choosing one that’s made from a fabric with a thick pile. For example, choosing a plush velvet headboard is a great fabric choice, due to its heat-retaining properties that we’ve touched on before.

Cleaning & Maintaining Your Bedding During The Cold Season

You can easily prepare for the cold season and maintain your bedding throughout the months with some simple tricks.

Regularly vacuuming your mattress and bed frame with an upholstery attachment is a great way of removing a build up of dust-mites, pet hairs and allergens, making your room feel refreshed and ready for the Christmas period. Another tip is to regularly strip your mattress and bedding to regularly air it out - this can allow for trapped heat to escape, reducing the build up of damp and condensation in your living space.

We all want to avoid those common colds and nasty viruses that occur over the winter months, so washing your bedding at the right temperature is a vital way of eliminating any bacteria that can build up and cause these unwanted illnesses.

Rotating your mattress 180° often is also a great way to ensure you have many nights of good quality sleep. It encourages a more even sleeping surface, which makes your mattress ultimately last longer and promotes a healthier sleep cycle.

Other Useful Accessories For The Winter Season

To keep your bedroom feeling cosy and warm throughout the winter season, there are so many accessories that you can choose from to provide you with the best night’s sleep, every night.
Electric blankets provide a luxurious amount of comfort and support for your bedding. Designed with different temperature settings, you can regulate your bed’s heat levels as you sleep throughout the night. They make must-have accessories for the winter season, to make you feel toasty and warm as the nights draw in.

During the winter season, our circadian rhythm is dysregulated due to the reduced amount of daylight that we have in the UK. Enhancing your bedroom space with plenty of soft lighting is a great way to help with this. You can decorate your bedroom with warm golden LED candles, fairy lights, LED strip lights - all of which can help your circadian rhythm, uplift your mood and ultimately help with your sleep.

Investing in some high-quality bedding is another ideal way to make your bed feel cosy and prepare for the wintry months. Teddy fleece bedding is a luxurious way to keep you feeling warm - it’s heat-insulating, soft to the touch and irresistible to dive into.

An energy-saving way to make your bedroom feel toasty and warm during winter is by using a draught stopper. This keeps out any cool air from entering your bedroom, making it a great way to save on your energy bills as you won’t have to turn the temperature higher on the thermostat all the time.

Of course, layering snuggly blankets and throws across your bed is also another ideal way of making sure you’re kept nice and warm. Not only do they provide a practical purpose of retaining heat in your bed, but they also serve a stylish and aesthetic appeal to many bedroom spaces.

My experience with Sloomy has been extremely disappointing from start to finish. The bed ordered via Debenhams for my vulnerable mother-in-law, who suffers from COPD and has limited mobility following a stroke, failed to arrive on the scheduled delivery date with no communication, update, or explanation. We had spent the day preparing for the delivery, including removing her existing bed, only to be left without any bed at all when the delivery failed to turn up. As a result, she was forced to spend the night sleeping on a sofa, causing significant discomfort and distress given her medical conditions. Despite the seriousness of the situation, there was little acknowledgment of the impact this had. When the bed finally arrived the following day, we discovered that the headboard could not be assembled because the required fittings were either missing or defective. What should have been a straightforward resolution turned into a frustrating and prolonged process. Attempts to obtain support have been met with slow responses, with Debenhams and sloomy passignbuck between each other, repeated requests for the same information, and a complete lack of ownership of the issue. We have been repeatedly asked to wait for escalations that never seem to happen, provide photographs multiple times, and start the process over with different agents who appear unaware of previous correspondence. Most concerning has been the apparent lack of urgency despite it being made clear that the customer affected is vulnerable. The combination of a missed delivery, poor communication, an incomplete product, lengthy delays in customer service responses, and failure to resolve the problem promptly has left us with very little confidence in Sloomy's customer care. Overall, this experience has been stressful, frustrating, and wholly unacceptable. I would not expect a vulnerable customer to be treated in this manner, and I hope significant improvements are made to both delivery reliability and after-sales support.

I ordered my sons bed to arrive two days before his birthday, I was pleasantly surprised when I received a text message to say it would actually arrive 6 days before his birthday, delivery was scheduled between 6am and 11am. On the delivery day I was at work and by 2.30pm I received a message saying the delivery van had broken down and they would contact me with an alternative date. Now I can understand that these things happen, what I do not understand and was infuriating was that I must have rang the landline number 20 times and the mobile number used to text me the same amount of times and that no one pciked up or answered the phone. The landline number just rang 5 times and then went dead. The service was shocking and being in limbo worrying if my son would get his bed before his birthday was frustrating. I did eventually get my bed at 6.35am on a bank holiday Monday morning!! I will admit the actual bed is very good quality and I cannot understimate this My advice for this company is that be aware if something goes wrong then you will be annoyed an frustrated

I would strongly advise others to think carefully before ordering from Sloomy. The bed I received was faulty and not fit for use. From the outset, resolving the issue was made unnecessarily difficult. Despite explaining that I am disabled, I was repeatedly asked to repackage and handle a large, broken bed using the original packaging, which was not a reasonable or accessible request. When I asked for communication by email as a reasonable adjustment, this was ignored. I was instead pushed into phone contact, and when I explained I record calls to help manage my disability, the representative refused to continue the conversation. At no point was a fair or practical resolution offered. The overall handling of this issue shows a complete lack of customer care and disregard for accessibility. This has been stressful, upsetting, and entirely avoidable. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this company.

Appalling Service and are not interested in retaining customers and obviously do not want a business. Placed an order with a specified delivery date to be advised by message that they cannot deliver until a week later than this. No apology and not interested in resolving. Do not use this company
