What is a Storage Bed?

Imagine the perfect marriage between functionality and style; that's precisely what a storage bed is. At its core, a storage bed is a bed with integrated storage spaces, offering a clever solution to bedroom clutter. Whether you're looking to store extra bedding, seasonal clothes, or even shoes, storage beds provide a hidden sanctuary for all these items right beneath you.

A Deeper Dive into the History of Storage Beds

The concept of storage beds has its roots firmly planted in ancient civilisations, and its evolution is a testament to human ingenuity and the timeless need for functional space-saving solutions.

Ancient Egypt: The Egyptians, known for their grandeur and intricate designs, crafted beds raised from the ground on wooden or stone supports. Beneath these beds, they placed wooden chests or drawers, which served dual purposes. Firstly, they were used for storing personal items, clothing, and even prized possessions. Secondly, the raised designs ensured protection against pests and dirt. In some cases, the beds of the elite and royalty had ornate compartments to safeguard their treasures and important artefacts.

Roman Empire: With their flair for luxury and comfort, the Romans also adopted and refined the concept of storage beds. Their versions were often lavishly designed and used for sleep and lounging during the day. Beneath these lounging spaces, drawers and compartments were integrated, storing everything from clothing to scrolls and books. Roman households, especially wealthy ones, saw these beds as symbols of status, with the added benefit of providing space-saving storage solutions.

Ottoman Empire: The term 'Ottoman bed' can trace its lineage back to the expansive Ottoman Empire. This design became synonymous with elegance and practicality and was initially used as seating furniture that doubled as storage. Over time, as the empire expanded its territories and influences, the concept was merged with traditional bedding, leading to the Ottoman beds we recognise today: a bed frame that can be lifted to reveal a generous storage area underneath.

Divan Beds from Persia:The word 'Divan' originally referred to a council or assembly of officials in Persia. Over time, it came to signify the seating platforms where these assemblies took place. These platforms were adorned with plush cushions and pillows, and the space beneath was used for storage. As the idea travelled to Europe and underwent several adaptations, it gradually transformed into the Divan beds we see today, with pull-out drawers and a sturdy base.

Throughout history, storage beds have not only been about functionality but also a reflection of the socio-cultural nuances of the time. They have evolved from sleeping platforms to multifunctional furniture, blending aesthetics, comfort, and utility.

Benefits of a Storage Bed

There are many reasons you should opt for a storage bed, with the following benefits being particularly useful in the home.

Space Saving: Every square foot counts in modern homes, especially those in urban settings. Storage beds capitalise on the space under your bed, transforming it into a useful storage compartment.

Aesthetic Appeal: Say goodbye to visible clutter! Storage beds keep your belongings hidden, ensuring your bedroom looks neat.

Cost-effective: Instead of investing in extra wardrobes or storage units, a storage bed is a two-in-one solution, acting as both a comfortable sleeping space and a storage solution.

Enhanced Organisation: Divided compartments in some storage beds make it easy to categorise and organise your items.

Stress Reduction: A tidy room is a tidy mind. Decluttering has been shown to reduce stress and promote better sleep, making storage beds a wellness tool.

Types of Storage Beds

You have a number of options to consider with storage beds, including the following options.

Platform Beds

Platform beds come with a raised platform that supports the mattress. While they primarily serve as a stylish alternative to traditional beds, many modern designs incorporate drawers beneath the platform for added storage.

Ottoman Beds

A favourite at Sloomy, Ottoman beds feature a hinged top that can be lifted to reveal a spacious storage area underneath. These are particularly beneficial for storing larger items. The gas-assisted lift makes opening and closing a breeze, whether you choose an end-opening or side-opening design.

Divan Beds

Timeless and versatile, Divan beds come with built-in drawers for storage . They can have two drawers on one side or up to four, depending on the size. They are perfect for homes where bed positioning might limit access from one side.

Cabin Beds

Cabin beds are similar to loft beds but sit lower to the ground. They often feature a combination of drawers, shelves, and sometimes even a desk underneath the sleeping area.

Loft Beds

A loft bed is raised high off the ground, allowing for various uses underneath, from desks to sofas or even another bed. The space beneath a loft bed can also be used for storage, with built-in furniture or standalone pieces.

Bedroom challenges, especially in the modern age, revolve around optimising space without compromising aesthetics. Storage beds, with their dual functionality, address these challenges head-on. They offer an economical solution, using space that would otherwise go wasted.

At Sloomy, our expertise in storage beds is evident in our vast collection of colours, fabrics, and styles. Each bed is designed keeping the user in mind, ensuring ease of use, ample storage, and a good night's sleep.

My experience with Sloomy has been extremely disappointing from start to finish. The bed ordered via Debenhams for my vulnerable mother-in-law, who suffers from COPD and has limited mobility following a stroke, failed to arrive on the scheduled delivery date with no communication, update, or explanation. We had spent the day preparing for the delivery, including removing her existing bed, only to be left without any bed at all when the delivery failed to turn up. As a result, she was forced to spend the night sleeping on a sofa, causing significant discomfort and distress given her medical conditions. Despite the seriousness of the situation, there was little acknowledgment of the impact this had. When the bed finally arrived the following day, we discovered that the headboard could not be assembled because the required fittings were either missing or defective. What should have been a straightforward resolution turned into a frustrating and prolonged process. Attempts to obtain support have been met with slow responses, with Debenhams and sloomy passignbuck between each other, repeated requests for the same information, and a complete lack of ownership of the issue. We have been repeatedly asked to wait for escalations that never seem to happen, provide photographs multiple times, and start the process over with different agents who appear unaware of previous correspondence. Most concerning has been the apparent lack of urgency despite it being made clear that the customer affected is vulnerable. The combination of a missed delivery, poor communication, an incomplete product, lengthy delays in customer service responses, and failure to resolve the problem promptly has left us with very little confidence in Sloomy's customer care. Overall, this experience has been stressful, frustrating, and wholly unacceptable. I would not expect a vulnerable customer to be treated in this manner, and I hope significant improvements are made to both delivery reliability and after-sales support.

I ordered my sons bed to arrive two days before his birthday, I was pleasantly surprised when I received a text message to say it would actually arrive 6 days before his birthday, delivery was scheduled between 6am and 11am. On the delivery day I was at work and by 2.30pm I received a message saying the delivery van had broken down and they would contact me with an alternative date. Now I can understand that these things happen, what I do not understand and was infuriating was that I must have rang the landline number 20 times and the mobile number used to text me the same amount of times and that no one pciked up or answered the phone. The landline number just rang 5 times and then went dead. The service was shocking and being in limbo worrying if my son would get his bed before his birthday was frustrating. I did eventually get my bed at 6.35am on a bank holiday Monday morning!! I will admit the actual bed is very good quality and I cannot understimate this My advice for this company is that be aware if something goes wrong then you will be annoyed an frustrated

I would strongly advise others to think carefully before ordering from Sloomy. The bed I received was faulty and not fit for use. From the outset, resolving the issue was made unnecessarily difficult. Despite explaining that I am disabled, I was repeatedly asked to repackage and handle a large, broken bed using the original packaging, which was not a reasonable or accessible request. When I asked for communication by email as a reasonable adjustment, this was ignored. I was instead pushed into phone contact, and when I explained I record calls to help manage my disability, the representative refused to continue the conversation. At no point was a fair or practical resolution offered. The overall handling of this issue shows a complete lack of customer care and disregard for accessibility. This has been stressful, upsetting, and entirely avoidable. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this company.

Appalling Service and are not interested in retaining customers and obviously do not want a business. Placed an order with a specified delivery date to be advised by message that they cannot deliver until a week later than this. No apology and not interested in resolving. Do not use this company
