It’s psychologically proven that having a decluttered space also tidies the mind: it reduces anxiety levels, improves daily routines and helps you fall asleep quicker.

So, whether you’re shopping around for a new bed, or simply looking for some tips on how to utilise your storage space, we’ve got you covered with the latest tips and advice from the sleep experts. First, we’ll delve into what an Ottoman bed is and why it’s so great for making you sleep better.

What Are Ottoman Storage Beds?

Ottoman Beds are designed with a gas-lift system that lifts up and reveals ample storage underneath. Remember that suitcase you took with you on holiday last summer? Or those seasonal hats and scarves you used that winter? Well, anything you don’t want on show can be easily stored away in the spacious Ottoman bed: out of sight, out of mind.

It is understood that the Ottoman bed originated in the Ottoman Empire during the 18th century, and it was used as a combined furniture piece that doubled up into a bed. As the centuries have gone on and we’ve become accustomed to owning so many items, the Ottoman bed has made its way into our modern homes.

Nowadays, the Ottoman storage bed has become increasingly popular thanks to its versatility, seamless design and effective storage system. They're designed to last for many years to come, especially with our handcrafted upholstery techniques and premium fabrics - which, by the way, you can order a sample before buying. Including plush velvet, dumfries and naples, your Ottoman bed can be styled as you like. But with all of these fabric choices, there’s one thing in common: their strength and versatility which makes the Ottoman bed able to withstand wear and tear for many years to come.

Plus, you can order the complete set and customise your Ottoman bed with a range of our stunning headboards  - whether it’s the Montana Headboard for a luxurious feel, the Manhattan Headboards for a contemporary look, or a Devonshire Headboard that makes you feel hugged in your bed, we have a wide range of styles to suit everyone’s tastes.

So, you can customise your Ottoman bed as you please, allowing you to find one that looks beautiful in your home, maximises your storage, and enhances your sleep quality!

Who Benefits From Ottoman Beds?

There are so many people that can benefit from an Ottoman Bed, but we’ll break down who exactly.

Couples with a need for extra storage will definitely benefit from an Ottoman bed - if both of your belongings are getting mixed up and  you’ve already maxed out your storage space in your wardrobe and attic, the Ottoman bed is perfect for you. There are choices of Ottoman beds that allow you to separate you and your partner’s belongings with their two sections. It’s an ideal way to keep things organised and prevent your things from becoming miscellaneous. Alternatively, you may like to customise the layout of your storage yourself, so an Ottoman Bed with one large storage section could do the trick.

Ottoman beds are even more ideal for families - you can store anything from books, toys, bedding, large items and so much more. We all know that families accumulate so many belongings over the years, so you can easily hide things away when they’re not in use underneath the Ottoman Bed to declutter your space.

We also believe that an Ottoman bed is perfect for those with limited space. You may be living in a small apartment with limited square footage, and when it comes to storage, your wardrobe is just not going to cut it. But don’t worry - an ottoman bed can be a seamless storage solution to store all of your things - it can transform your living space as you free it from unorganised items.

More often than not, our Ottoman beds are designed with slats on the bed frame, which creates a flexible sleeping position. The wooden slats in between the bed frame are built securely, and they also allow for improved air circulation. This is great for temperature regulation if you’re a hot sleeper or it’s during the summer, and it also keeps your belongings underneath protected.

How Do I Make the Most Out Of The Storage Of An Ottoman Bed?

When it comes to making the most out of the storage space under your Ottoman bed, there are so many ideas to choose from! So, why don’t we take a look?

Some of you may like a systematic, organised approach when it comes to storing your items underneath the Ottoman bed. We’ve touched on how some of our beds have two sections, but if you’d like to take the extra step to separate your belongings, we recommend using some storage dividers. This is so you can easily store your electronics and keep them separate from your shoes, or your blankets separate from your toiletries, and you could even label things so you’ll know what’s what. They’re really good ways to keep everything safe and well-organised  - it’s only going to make things easier when it comes to looking for a certain item during your daily routine.

Another tip is to use vacuum packed bags. These are designed to reduce the bulk of your items, which drastically maximises your storage space even further. So, if you have extra bedding like pillows and duvet covers, you could potentially vacuum pack them so they’re compressed and save space. The airtight seals of these vacuum packed bags are also very good for protecting your items - they avoid a build-up of damp or moisture from getting onto them, keeping them fresh before your next use.

How Do I Care & Maintain An Ottoman Bed?

Caring for your ottoman bed is essential for you to enhance your sleep quality and get you money’s worth out of your bed over the years. Our beds are upholstered and designed to last a very long time, but there’s some extra steps you can take to really make sure you don’t need a replacement any time soon.

The first tip is to ensure that the slats of the ottoman bed are well secured. This is to make sure that the wood doesn’t splinter or start sagging, which can affect your mattress and create an uncomfortable sleeping experience. So, when assembling, ensure that they’re tightly screwed and check them every so often to make sure you have a strong sleeping foundation.

Vacuuming your bed along the bed frame, inside it and around the headboard every so often, with an upholstery attachment, can remove the build up of dust, debris and hairs - especially if you have pets. If you are prone to sneezing often, this not only helps your bed last longer, but it removes those pesky allergens that can interfere with your sleep. So, this is a hygienic and sleep-enhancing way to show your bed and its internal storage some TLC.

Another tip to look after your ottoman bed is to rotate your mattress 180 degrees every few months or so. This helps with evenly distributing the weight over the mattress  - not only does this help extend your mattress’ lifespan, but it helps support the weight that is pressing down onto the wooden slats of the Ottoman bed.

To clean the fabric and the upholstery of the bed, we suggest spraying it with fabric cleaner and a lightly damp cloth to remove any other build up of dirt. Only use light cleaning solutions, don’t use harsh chemicals such as bleach - this can leave stains and damage the fabric even more. The lighter the better!

To keep things smelling extra fresh, you could use some scented fabric spray on the upholstery of the bed, and even some scented sachets in the underneath storage, so you’re greeted with a fresh fragrance every time you open the bed.

Tips To Make Your Ottoman Bed Even Cosier

So you now know some cleaning tips for the Ottoman bed, but what are some extra steps to make the bed even cosier? Well, we’ll dive straight in to find out.

Mattresses

Finding the right mattress for you and your Ottoman bed is an essential way to give you many nights of comfortable, uninterrupted sleep. We have a wide range of mattresses to choose from that work very well with Ottoman beds, including pocket spring and memory foam ones.

One of our mattress options to ensure you have a comfortable night’s sleep every night is the memory foam mattress. These are normally made from latex and sponge, so they have a high amount of viscosity and flexibility. They get to know your body’s shapes, contours and preferred sleeping positions over time. Our memory foam mattresses are good for Ottoman beds since they tend to be lightweight, which is ideal for when you’re lifting the bed frame up and down.

We also offer some pocket sprung mattresses. Designed with thousands of individually enclosed pocket springs, these mattresses help reduce noise and motion transfer - they’re perfect if you have a partner and would like uninterrupted sleep, as you’ll not hear their movements during the night as much. These mattress types are also fantastic for Ottoman beds, as they are more breathable and don’t trap moisture - this helps protect your internal storage underneath.

Bedding

As well as your mattress, choosing the right bedding for an ottoman bed is an extra step forward when it comes to creating a cosy sleeping retreat in your bedroom.

If you’re someone who has allergies, you could go for bedding that’s made out of natural materials, such as cotton, bamboo and even silk. These are comfortable, plush bedding materials for duvets and pillowcases that help you stop sneezing and itching throughout the night, and they’re also eco-friendly options - it’s a win-win!

Mattress toppers are also useful when it comes to protecting your mattress and adding an extra comfortable layer. For example, if you like the support of your orthopaedic mattress but you would like to make it feel more soft to the touch, it’s almost as though you can customise its comfort by adding a soft mattress topper over it.

During the winter, as you know, the nights become so cold in the UK. An electric blanket is a real game-changer when it comes to elevating the comfort of your bed. It’s important to stay warm in winter, to fight infections and the common cold, so not only does an electric blanket  improve your sleep quality, it also looks after your immune system. Plus, they’re not too harsh on your electric bill - they use just as much power as a small light bulb.

Equally, during the summer months, you can tidy away the electric blanket under your Ottoman bed to swap it with some breathable bedding materials. We suggest linen blankets, wool throws with gaps in between and thinner bed sheets - this will create a more temperature-regulated sleeping experience.

Headboards & Other Accessories

Choosing the right headboard can also have a big impact on the comfort of your Ottoman bed for several reasons. If you’re someone who loves to sit upright and read a book, a headboard can offer plenty of support. They also make noise-dampening and heat-insulating accessories as they act as another layer between you and your wall. Earlier, we mentioned some different styles of headboards, but these aren’t our only options - explore some more styles to customise your dream Ottoman bed.

To make your ottoman bed feel even cosier, you could begin adding some plush cushions and throws. Not only do these make lovely decorative and colourful accents for your bed, but they make excellent accessories for when you’re sitting upright, reading a book and watching TV. If you decide to not use them anymore or you want to swap them for cushions that have a different colour scheme, you can easily store them away in the ample underneath storage of the ottoman bed.

My experience with Sloomy has been extremely disappointing from start to finish. The bed ordered via Debenhams for my vulnerable mother-in-law, who suffers from COPD and has limited mobility following a stroke, failed to arrive on the scheduled delivery date with no communication, update, or explanation. We had spent the day preparing for the delivery, including removing her existing bed, only to be left without any bed at all when the delivery failed to turn up. As a result, she was forced to spend the night sleeping on a sofa, causing significant discomfort and distress given her medical conditions. Despite the seriousness of the situation, there was little acknowledgment of the impact this had. When the bed finally arrived the following day, we discovered that the headboard could not be assembled because the required fittings were either missing or defective. What should have been a straightforward resolution turned into a frustrating and prolonged process. Attempts to obtain support have been met with slow responses, with Debenhams and sloomy passignbuck between each other, repeated requests for the same information, and a complete lack of ownership of the issue. We have been repeatedly asked to wait for escalations that never seem to happen, provide photographs multiple times, and start the process over with different agents who appear unaware of previous correspondence. Most concerning has been the apparent lack of urgency despite it being made clear that the customer affected is vulnerable. The combination of a missed delivery, poor communication, an incomplete product, lengthy delays in customer service responses, and failure to resolve the problem promptly has left us with very little confidence in Sloomy's customer care. Overall, this experience has been stressful, frustrating, and wholly unacceptable. I would not expect a vulnerable customer to be treated in this manner, and I hope significant improvements are made to both delivery reliability and after-sales support.

I ordered my sons bed to arrive two days before his birthday, I was pleasantly surprised when I received a text message to say it would actually arrive 6 days before his birthday, delivery was scheduled between 6am and 11am. On the delivery day I was at work and by 2.30pm I received a message saying the delivery van had broken down and they would contact me with an alternative date. Now I can understand that these things happen, what I do not understand and was infuriating was that I must have rang the landline number 20 times and the mobile number used to text me the same amount of times and that no one pciked up or answered the phone. The landline number just rang 5 times and then went dead. The service was shocking and being in limbo worrying if my son would get his bed before his birthday was frustrating. I did eventually get my bed at 6.35am on a bank holiday Monday morning!! I will admit the actual bed is very good quality and I cannot understimate this My advice for this company is that be aware if something goes wrong then you will be annoyed an frustrated

I would strongly advise others to think carefully before ordering from Sloomy. The bed I received was faulty and not fit for use. From the outset, resolving the issue was made unnecessarily difficult. Despite explaining that I am disabled, I was repeatedly asked to repackage and handle a large, broken bed using the original packaging, which was not a reasonable or accessible request. When I asked for communication by email as a reasonable adjustment, this was ignored. I was instead pushed into phone contact, and when I explained I record calls to help manage my disability, the representative refused to continue the conversation. At no point was a fair or practical resolution offered. The overall handling of this issue shows a complete lack of customer care and disregard for accessibility. This has been stressful, upsetting, and entirely avoidable. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this company.

Appalling Service and are not interested in retaining customers and obviously do not want a business. Placed an order with a specified delivery date to be advised by message that they cannot deliver until a week later than this. No apology and not interested in resolving. Do not use this company
